How can I lessen family conflict over the holidays?

The holiday season can be tough for recently divorced couples in Wisconsin. This is especially true when it comes to celebrations and gatherings, where those in attendance may cause problems among family members. While conflict can’t be avoided, there are steps you can take to reduce family stress, which can be exacerbated by a recent separation. Very Well Mind offers the following tips so you can make it through this holiday season unscathed.

Prepare yourself for issues

If you have family members prone to creating drama, prepare yourself for these issues ahead of time. Some family members might mean well but have a hard time expressing themselves. In this case, try to keep a sense of humor about the situation and take their words with a grain of salt. In other instances, only provide as much information as you’re comfortable with and don’t let negative statements ruin your mood.

Have your own celebration

You can also have your own celebration and invite only loved ones who make a meaningful contribution to your life. This can include friends, as well as family members you enjoy spending time with. If you want to keep it a private affair, host a holiday celebration for just you and your kids.

Take turns with your ex

If you must attend family gatherings, consider taking turns with your ex. Trading off holidays relieves some of the scheduling woes that accompany visiting multiple relatives on one day. It also prevents you from having to spend time with former in-laws, which may prove uncomfortable so soon after a separation.
